Remembering Your Meds

Having Trouble Remembering to Take your Medications? Here are some simple tips to help.

Taking a medication every day can be hard for anyone to remember, especially for people who have ADHD. Everyone is different and it might take a few tries to find out what works best for you, so don’t get discouraged if you have to try again. Here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Use a Pillbox: Pillboxes are a great organizational tool, especially when you have multiple medications. If you are unsure if you took your medication that day, you can simply look in the box and see if it’s empty or full. Some pharmacies can put your pills in a blister pack, which is also a good option.

  2. Set Reminders: Your smart devices have alarm and reminder features, try setting multiple alarms if that seems helpful. There are many apps as well, such as MediSafe which can help you keep track of your medications.

  3. Pair it With an Established Routine: Creating and sticking to a new routine can be challenging, so try to think of a routine that you already have in place and adding your medication to that routine. Maybe you brush your teeth every day, in that case you can put your meds next to your toothbrush to help you remember. Every day you wake up and go to bed, so you can try and put your meds on your nightstand with a bottle of water so it’s easy to take. Or, try putting your medication bottle in your shoes if you wear shoes every day. Everyone has their own simple routines, what are yours.

  4. Get Creative: Make taking medications fun, so you stay interested in the task. Decorate your pill organizer with charms and stickers, write encouraging notes to yourself and put them in the pill organizer, or try to give yourself small rewards after taking your medication.

  5. Ask Someone at Home to Help: If you live with someone who is good at remembering daily tasks, ask them if they can help remind you. Or, maybe you have a friend who is also taking medications - you can help remind each other through text even if they don’t live with you. Having support and being supportive of others is a great way to feel more confident, you can do this!
