Provider Spotlight: Michael Garrett, MA, LMFT

Meet Michael Garrett

What do all those letters after your name mean?

My name is Michael Garrett. I received a Masters in Arts in Counseling Psychology: Marriage and Family Therapy. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT).

What brought you to Health Quest?

After speaking with Dr. Megan Connell and Dr. Ryan Kelly, I wanted to continue the opportunity to use geek fandom, such as dungeons and dragons, superheroes, anime, etc. to help others who may be going through a difficult time in their lives.

What does innovation mean for you and your practice?

I really do believe change is a constant, and with change comes the opportunity to learn new strategies, techniques, and methods of delivering support to those in need. As a mental health support individual, it is also my job to continue to strengthen my social and cultural awareness in order to teach and model these new skills in a sound manner.

What are some recent developments in your field that you are most excited about?

Increased use of telehealth services is very appealing to me, mostly because I like the idea of reaching out to as many people as possible. I would like to see which platform provides the best therapeutic support, and the utilization of different tools and art to create a more interactive interaction with our participants.

What media (books, films, TV etc.) do find most inspirational?

The ability to role-play and practice skills learned in tabletop role play games has always been fascinating to me. Plus, we play a lot of dungeons and dragons in my family.  I’m also a fan of Avatar, the last Airbender and Star Trek. With these two genres, fantasy and sci-fi respectively, it’s more than just their ability to use their powers or technology to solve challenges, but both shows do a great job of highlighting the emotional challenges humans go through everyday and how to grow from these challenges.

What does good self-care look like for you?

I really enjoy going out to eat with my family. It gets us an opportunity to catch up with one another on how her day is going while also getting ourselves out of the house. I also really enjoyed going to the movie theater. Being able to sit in such an immersive experience, or it’s just you and the big screen has always been a hobby of mine.
